Following our last blog on Turkey’s first and foremost amber+qvevri wine by Udo Hirsch, we’ve recently learned that Chamlija winery has also joined the Amber Revolution, launching its first orange wine in the Thrace region (in North-east of Greece, South of Bulgaria, and within European Turkey).
Prominent Turkish winemaker and founder of Chamlija Mustafa Camlica who is famous for producing Turkey’s first Pinot Noir described that the experience of making natural, amber wine should be considered as creating a piece of art. (Note: Mustafa’s daughter Irem Çamlica is a renowned artist in Turkey, and her artwork adorns the Chamilja wines.)
“It’s like driving a car without brakes and gas pedal!” Camlica added.
Chamlija’s latest creation is made out of 100% Narince, which is a native white Turkish grape, with a minimum of manipulation – no Küp or qvevri, no added SO2, no fining and no filtering - and only natural malolactic fermentation.
Camlica said he wanted to test his winemaking skills without any help from technology and chemicals throughout the amber experiment. Hence he let the handpicked, de-stemmed grapes enjoy 21 days of cuvaision (cuvage) and open fermentation, allowing skin colors and flavors to impart into the grape juice.
The result is a beautiful golden colored wine that shows almost - red wine chewy texture (tannins) with lifted aromas of sweet spices, herbs, white flowers, oranges, tangerines and lime. It gives a rich and rounded creamy mouthfeel with good acidity.
The first ever vintage of Chamlija Narince is 2018, which has been bottled and released in Turkey. Only 500 liters (a few hundred bottles) are produced, and a few cases have been allocated to Hong Kong to accommodate the local burgeoning natural wine market. It will be available in store in Feb’ 2019.

Pale amber in colour. Apple, hazelnut, ripe pear on the nose. Medium + pronounced tannins and alcohol are balanced with yellow apple and ripe pear. Mouth filling and delicious. (Meltem Coskun)
Delicious amber, qvevri wine with only three days of skin contact so it isn't very full bodied or tannic. It has orange peel, peach, apricot, nuts, forrest floor and earth notes while still remaining fresh. It smelled a tad funky at first but that blew off quickly. We paired it with fine dining asian food and it drank beautifully. Bright and delicious amber wine.
The wine spends a year in used barriques after its time in qvevri. It’s bright gold in color, with a pretty scent combining doughy richness, walnut butter, umami and a sweet barley sugar note. It is an accessible and attractive reading of the qvevri style, with rounded flavors of apple and apricot, soft, ripe acidity, limpid textures, and a nutty finish. This is a clean and fresh style - 'let’s have qvevri wine without diseases,' says chief winemaker Philippe Lespy.
